Paper Shredder Supplies

Having a high-performance shredder is one thing, but keeping it well-performing without making a mess is another.

Despite their name, most paper shredders are not only for grinding paper. They can also cut through harder materials, like staples, paper clips, and even old CDs and DVDs. With that, the shredder’s cutting blades can get worn out if they’re used too frequently and for too long. Also, without the proper accessories, the shredded pieces of materials can end up scattered on your floor or even hanging in the air if they are too tiny and lightweight.

Thankfully, you can avoid these issues by using the right paper shredder supplies or accessories. In this article, we will discuss three of these important supplies, such as paper shredder oil, shredder bags, and shredder filters.

Paper Shredder Oil

Oiling is one of the most obvious maintenance procedures for shredders. What does it mean exactly? It means that you have to lubricate the cutting blades of the shredder to minimize the friction between the blades so that the cutting process will go smoothly.

Paper shredder manufacturers usually recommend specific oil brands for their products, just like the Dahle oil that’s made specifically for Dahle shredders.

Unless your shredder has a built-in lubrication system, it’s advisable to oil your shredder once every two months. If you frequently use the shredder, oil it as often as needed, especially when the cutting noise becomes louder than usual and jamming happens more frequently.

Shredder Bags

Shredders typically have waste bins that catch the shredded pieces. These bins are usually enough to make the waste disposal easy, but an even more convenient practice is to use shredder bags that you can put inside the bin. Their best advantage is that they gather the shredded pieces, so you’ll only have to pull the bin and tie the bag once it’s full and ready for disposal.

Shredder bags are not like regular garbage bags. They are thicker and more durable, so they aren’t likely to break even if sharp pieces of shredded staples and CDs get thrown into them. Most shredder bags also have gusseted sides, allowing the bag to expand until the maximum capacity of the shredder’s waste bin is reached.

Shredder Filters

Aside from the shredded pieces, paper shredders also produce very tiny dust particles during the cutting process. These particles are hardly visible, but you know they’re present if you smell a strong scent of paper in your shredding area and if the air feels heavier than usual.

If you or someone in your home or office has respiratory issues, the presence of dust particles can pose health risks, which is why it’s also important to manage these particles. Luckily, they can be manageable if you are using a CleanTEC shredder compatible with shredder filters.

The CleanTEC filter is attached to the rear of a shredder and effectively traps up to 98% of dust particles. It helps promote good indoor air quality as well as workplace safety.

Note that not all shredders are compatible with filters, so it’s something you could consider when buying a new paper shredder.
